Kul IN Language Academy: Language Study in the Heart of Europe

In recent years, Croatia has become a top tourist destination, with visitors from all over the world. Sisak is located in the heart of Croatia, sitting on three rivers in the midst of the charming Moslavina countryside.

The Željezara neighborhood of Sisak, where Kul IN is located, offers everything that you need at a walking distance: two grocery stores, a drugstore, a bakery, a post office, banks and ATM machines, and an intercity train station. You can walk through the oak forest along paved walkways, or relax on a bench by the pond. Parks are decorated with iron sculptures reminiscent of the city’s industrial era, and children’s playgrounds and basketball courts are scattered amongst the buildings. The neighborhood has recently renovated its tennis courts and swimming pool, offering plenty of recreational opportunities for students.

All of Kul IN’s apartments are located near a bus stop, and city bus transit will take you downtown in minutes. Taxis are also a very affordable method of transportation here. But you will notice that whenever the sun is out, the preferred mode of transportation is by bike. Sisak is flat and the perfect size to travel by bicycle.

What’s in downtown Sisak? Why, a little bit of everything. The edge of the river Kupa is lined with cafes, restaurants, and pizzerias. The promenade, or Korzo, is where various events take place, from public concerts to holiday celebrations. Amongst the stores, several art galleries and the Sisak city museum give you a glimpse of Sisak’s culture and history. However, the best way to get a feeling for Sisak’s age is to contemplate the Roman ruins that once belonged to the ancient city of Siscia.

Take a stroll along the Kupa River to where it merges with the Sava River, and you’ll come across Sisak’s Old Fortress, an impressive citadel built in the 16th century to resist the expansion of the Ottoman Empire into Europe. The fortress museum will take you deep into the history of Sisak-Moslavina County and the traditional lifestyle of the region.

Do you want to travel further? Beyond Sisak’s charming countryside and Lonjsko Polje Nature Park lies the metropolitan capital of Zagreb. Zip over to Croatia’s coast and relax on the beach. Hop over the border to Slovenia, Austria, or Hungary, or take a weekend trip to Italy. Franjo Tudman Airport, located between Zagreb and Sisak, offers flights to just about anywhere in Europe. Kul IN is your home base and the world is at your fingertips.

School’s out for summer!

Or at least it is for our students from three diligent companies in Sisak.

Three companies are finishing up their tailor-made English courses at Kul IN Language Academy. Not only did they cover a lot of Business English and technical vocabulary important to their individual fields, they were also quick to put their new skills to use!

Sanela and Siniša, sales representatives from the American-based solar panel manufacturing company Sunceco, tested their English skills at the solar show Intersolar in Munich, Germany a few weeks ago, where they promoted Sunceco’s photovoltaic systems and products.

Our 15 students from the multinational, materials engineering and manufacturing company Applied Ceramics are now prepared for further training in their field in the United States, as well as networking at SEMICON shows across the globe. Denis put his English to use in a weeklong training program with foreign mentor Simon, where he learned to program in the AMADA laser cutting system.

Marinela from PISAK startup incubator is strengthening ties with the US Embassy in Croatia, with plans to bring in expert American guest lecturers to educate, stimulate, and encourage PISAK’s tenants.

So what are we up to at Kul IN Language Academy now that the days are getting longer and hotter? We’re taking everything that summer has to offer and teaching 2-week summer vacation courses for those who want a relaxing yet fulfilling summer! Both Vacation English and A Croatian Summer (a two-week course in the Croatian Language) offer morning language classes and afternoon trips and activities through the enchanting greenery of Sisak-Moslavina County.

Send in your application and reserve your spot for an experience you are sure to remember! The registration deadline for our July course is coming up next Monday, June 19th!

Testing 1, 2, 3

Kul IN Language Academy’s Business English course ended with a wonderful triumph. Sanja and Maya watched their students’ serious faces as they worked through their exams. The students thought hard and fast about grammar tenses, definitions of various business terms, and language structure during the hour-long exam. “How can I turn the verb ‘advertise’ into a noun?” “How would I define ‘retirement’ in English?”

What a relief! Stress turned to laughter as they corrected their tests as a class. The students relaxed and enjoyed apple pie from the Kul IN kitchen as they were awarded their course certificates. But we had one more test waiting — a test for Kul IN Language Academy. Each student thoughtfully filled out a course evaluation sheet and commented on the questions.

As the students returned their course evaluation sheets, Maya’s and Sanja’s faces lit up. Taking an average of all 18 detailed evaluations, the students rated Kul IN Language Academy with a score of 4.81 out of 5. Here are some highlights we are especially proud of:

  • Our professors show professionalism in class and proficiency in the English language
  • The atmosphere in the classroom is comfortable, and students aren’t shy about asking questions
  • Our courses are fun and dynamic
  • Our students feel more comfortable speaking English than they did before

But the most wonderful surprise was when the students pulled out a gift for the teachers — a certificate exclaiming “Najbolja Profesorica na Kugli Zemaljskoj” (Best Teacher in the World). That is the best compliment a teacher can receive.

International Business Requires an International Language

How did two months fly by so quickly? It seems like only yesterday that Sanja Krešić was introducing herself to 9 new students from the company Applied Ceramics. Kul IN Language Academy had partnered with the company to create a two-month tailor made course for interested employees.

It seems like our students have sent out a good message about the program. The number of students for the upcoming Applied Ceramics spring English course has doubled! We are now in the midst of planning two English courses at different levels for 18 Applied Ceramics employees. The tailor made program combines general English, business English, and technical English specific to the company’s line of work.

Does your company do business internationally? When communicating with international customers and partners, appropriate word usage and grammar can strongly influence the outcome of a conversation, and good language skills can generally boost a company’s professional appearance. If you are interested in organizing a tailor-made business English course for your employees, we invite you to contact us and secure a course with a native English speaker from Kul IN Language Academy!
